Book Review: Checkmate: This is Effortless

Rating: 4.5 Bookworms

Goodreads Synopsis:

Courtney Bishop is as sugary sweet as her famous blueberry muffins.

Southern belle at heart, Cali girl by choice.

She barged into my life and easily became my best friend.

All was great as roommates and just friends, but then I fell for the girl who could chop firewood, deliver baby calves, and bail hay without breaking a sweat.

She’s the perfect mixture of sugar and spice, and I love her.
Being more than friends and trying to build our future isn’t as easy as it sounds.

Moving forward and creating memories is all I want for us, but when the past continues to come back and haunt me, I’m not so sure she’ll stay for the ride.
Loving her is easy, but losing her will break me. Burning passion combined with an undeniable chemistry constantly pushes and pulls us together. In the end, I’ll prove we’re worth the fight, even when the game is far from over.
Checkmate, sweetheart.

*This is book 2 in the Checkmate Duet Series–a friends to lovers romance. You must read book 1, Checkmate: This is Reckless first. Highly recommended to read the Checkmate Duet, This is War and This is Love first, but not necessary. This can read as a standalone duet.

My Thoughts

Finally have this baby in my hands! This was definitely in my Top 5 most highly anticipated books for 2017 and it did not disappoint. From the very first page I was hooked! Pure intrigue, drama, and humor the whole way through. Oh! Let’s not forget about the sexy times because those are very important! I wish I knew who Kennedy Fox was so that I could squeeze them super hard for not only bringing back my favorite duo, sorry #Traviola, but for somehow making their story even better! My one meh thing is that Mia is still around. Yes, seriously! I want her gone as in G O N E.

Drew is just as hot as ever and yes, he’s still rocking the cop uniform. While he was adorably oblivious in Reckless he’s now the perfect doting boyfriend–he even cheats on his diet to eat her muffins, if that’s not love I don’t know what is. In this book we definitely see more layers to Drew, like I said he’s a doting boyfriend, protective, loving, playful, willing to go above and beyond to keep Courtney happy. I loved seeing all of those different sides of Drew, especially because I think it accurately portrayed what it’s like to fall in love. It even potrayed some of the turmoil one feels when someone they love is in danger.

Poor Courtney goes through so much in this book. Drew comes with some pretty big baggage and that baggage is named Mia. Mia has proven time and again that she’s not leaving without a fight and she makes that apparent right off the bat. In this book Courtney shows a more vulnerable side while simultaneously showing Drew and the world that she’s willing to fight for what she loves. I love that in all Kennedy Fox books the female characters are a not wholly vulnerable nor impenetrable because I think that most women, in reality, fall somewhere in between. Courtney in particular shows that there is a certain strength in being vulnerable around the ones you love.

I love that all of their characters have flaws because there is no such thing as a perfect person, although I do come pretty close (HA). We’ve been told that the sequel is never as good as the original but that rule does not apply to Kennedy Fox. Since day one I’ve only fallen more and more in love with them. Not only are they amazing writers but they are also they absolute sweetest people I have yet to meet (soon!). Continue along this epic love story with This is Dangerous, Logan and Kayla’s story–cover reveal coming soon!
